GroovyChannel and Intel Collaborate on Multi-Core Database Application
GroovyChannel and Intel Collaborate on Multi-Core Database Application: "'The GroovyDB appliance is based on a 24 core Intel server powered by four, six-core Xeon® processors and positioned to provide unparalleled performance and cost effectiveness. Our goal is to achieve a number one ranking on TPC.org's TPC benchmark, the industry standard for measuring database performance in the web-based price/performance categories. Early stage performance results point to the GroovyDB achieving this result, this year,' said Mr. Ward.
'In this relationship, we see Intel and GroovyChannel pioneering a substantial lead in high performance scalable, LIVE data management,' said Narendra Bhandari, Director of APAC Software and Solutions Group (SSG) at Intel Corporation. 'Our objective in this agreement is to provide our customers with the necessary technology alliances that will enable the GroovyDB in a performing and cost effective manner.'"

Sharding Counters - Google App Engine - Google Code
Sharding Counters - Google App Engine - Google Code: "When you want to know the value of the counter you read all of the counter shards and add them all together. The more shards you have the higher the throughput you will have for increments on your counter. This technique works for a lot more than just counters and an important skill to learn is spotting the entities in your application with a lot of writes and then finding good ways to shard them."

Amazon EC2 Instance Types
Amazon EC2 Instance Types: "Amazon EC2 uses a variety of measures to provide each instance with a consistent and predictable amount of CPU capacity. In order to make it easy for developers to compare CPU capacity between different instance types, we have defined an Amazon EC2 Compute Unit. The amount of CPU that is allocated to a particular instance is expressed in terms of these EC2 Compute Units. We use several benchmarks and tests to manage the consistency and predictability of the performance of an EC2 Compute Unit. One EC2 Compute Unit provides the equivalent CPU capacity of a 1.0-1.2 GHz 2007 Opteron or 2007 Xeon processor."

Dell Nehalem men badmouth your servers • The Register: "The company has talked up a new lifecycle controller for the servers, which sets up, deploys, diagnoses, and updates the servers, starting at the Dell factory and ending in the recycle bin. The lifecycle controller has hooks back into Dell's internal cloud computing facility, where companies can create physical and virtual server software stacks and have Dell automatically deploy these customized stacks on new machines as they are ordered. Think of this as a service processor on steroids."

Apache CouchDB: The CouchDB Project
Apache CouchDB: The CouchDB Project: "Apache CouchDB is a distributed, fault-tolerant and schema-free document-oriented database accessible via a RESTful HTTP/JSON API. Among other features, it provides robust, incremental replication with bi-directional conflict detection and resolution, and is queryable and indexable using a table-oriented view engine with JavaScript acting as the default view definition language."
Unconventional architectures that might scale (I) at log4p
Unconventional architectures that might scale (I) at log4p: "Amazon has it's SimpleDB, Ruby folks seem to like MongoDB and rumors about the rising of Voldemort are spreading throughout the web. I like CouchDB, mainly due to the fact that it's build on a solid functional language (Erlang).
CouchDB offers a JSON based document model. Documents are manipulated using REST. CouchDB also offers support for replication between other instances. Custom views of the document in the database (also accessed via HTTP) are written in Javascript (where JSON is a native data structure)."

How to Sell Companies on Cloud Computing - BusinessWeek
How to Sell Companies on Cloud Computing - BusinessWeek: "Yousef Khalidi, a distinguished engineer at Microsoft (MSFT) who is helping to build the software giant's Azure cloud platform, had a cautious assessment of how enterprises are likely to view the cloud. He thinks corporate IT will want to keep its cloud under corporate control, and that as a result, the creation of hybrid clouds—or 'cloudbursting'—in which certain jobs move from the internal servers to an external cloud, are going to be a preferred model"

Rick Steves | Salon Life: "A lot of my outlook and writing have been sharpened by enjoying a little recreational marijuana. If you arrested everybody who smoked marijuana in the United States tomorrow, this country would be a much less interesting place to call home.
The fact is, the marijuana law in the U.S. is a big lie. It's racist and classist. White rich people can smoke marijuana with impunity and poor black people get a record, can't get education, can't get a loan, and all of sudden go into a life of desperation and become hardened criminals. Why? Because we've got a racist law based on lies about marijuana."

And let me tell you...there are some IMPRESSIVE numbers in there! The tests performed were intended to mimic the actions of everyday Notes/Domino users - with messaging and calendar operations on the server. Then, the team measured % processor busy, disk operations per second and disk megabytes transferred per second."

Instance Types and Architectures
Instance Types and Architectures: "How do I select the right instance type?
Amazon EC2 instances are grouped into two families: standard and High-CPU. Standard instances have memory to CPU ratios suitable for most general purpose applications; High-CPU instances have proportionally more CPU resources than memory (RAM) and are well suited for compute-intensive applications. When selecting instance types, you might want to use less powerful instance types for your web server instances and more powerful instance types for your database instances. Additionally, you might want to run CPU instance types for CPU-intensive data processing tasks.
For most applications, the standard instance types are appropriate. These instance types include the small instance (m1.small), large instance (m1.large), and extra large instance (m1.xlarge). High-CPU instances are well suited for compute-intensive applications such as rendering, search indexing, and computational analysis. The High-CPU instance types are the High-CPU medium instance (c1.medium) and the High-CPU extra large instance (c1.xlarge). For more information, refer to Instance Types"

Death Was Punk Before Punk Was Punk - NYTimes.com: "reveal a remarkable missing link between the high-energy hard rock of Detroit bands like the Stooges and MC5 from the late 1960s and early ’70s and the high-velocity assault of punk from its breakthrough years of 1976 and ’77. Price-at-risk: a methodology for pricing utility computing services.
Price-at-risk: a methodology for pricing utility computing services.: "Utility computing services represent a departure from the current ways of doing business. On one hand, they feature attributes that appeal to customers: short lead times in service provisioning, high reliability and survivability, customized service level agreements, a reduced learning curve in the adoption of a new service, and easy access to new technology. On the other hand, utility computing services have direct financial benefits for the customer. These benefits come about in two distinct ways. First, utility computing services reduce the risk faced by the customer because the costs to the customer are proportional to the volume of transactions performed during a certain time interval (say, a quarter). These transactions are usually correlated with the number of financial transactions performed during the same interval, and therefore with the revenue stream of the customer. Therefore, the cost structure is tied to the revenue"
