SCOTUS option on ca church injunction

Although California's guidelines place restrictions on places of worship, those restrictions appear consistent with the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment. Similar or more severe restrictions apply to comparable secular gatherings, including lectures, concerts, movie showings, spectator sports, and theatrical performances, where large groups of people gather in close proximity for extended pe- riods of time. And the Order exempts or treats more leni- ently only dissimilar activities, such as operating grocery stores, banks, and laundromats, in which people neither congregate in large groups nor remain in close proximity for extended periods.

Jourdon Anderson Writes His Former Enslaver, 1865 | The American Yawp Reader

If you fail to pay us for faithful labors in the past, we can have little faith in your promises in the future. We trust the good Maker has opened your eyes to the wrongs which you and your fathers have done to me and my fathers, in making us toil for you for generations without recompense. Here I draw my wages every Saturday night; but in Tennessee there was never any pay-day for the negroes any more than for the horses and cows. Surely there will be a day of reckoning for those who defraud the laborer of his hire.

Russia mulls expansion of auctions for all fishing quotas

However, the RAS has proposed replacing its system of awarding fishing quotas based on historic catch averages with auctions, similar to the changes made in recent years to Russia's crab fishery. In 2019, the Russian government moved 50 percent of its crab quota into what it called "investment auctions," which awarded quota in lots to the highest bidder, provided they build a new crab vessel built at a Russian shipyard

Life with Bob Dylan, 1989-2006 | Page 5 of 6 | UNCUT

His songs continuously evolve. For him, it's all about getting the track to fit the words, not the other way around. That's why there are so many bootlegs, six versions of 'Like A Rolling Stone', four 'Visions Of Johanna'. Bob is constantly changing it: 'What key are we in?' 'G.' 'What tempo?' '85 bpm, Bob.' 'Okay, well let's do it in C-minor, and let's crank up the tempo to 104, and, Charlie, I want you on electric instead of acoustic, Tony, I want you to play upright bass instead of electric, oh, and I want you playing lap-steel.' And we're like, 'Ooookay…' He's always trying to find the arrangement that works best with the sentiment he's trying to express. He might say, 'I'm kinda hearing this old Billie Holiday song.' And so we'll start with that: the band will actually start playing that song, try to get that sound, and then he'll go, 'Okay, and this is how my song goes.' It's a weird process, unique to him out of any bands I've worked with over 22 years."

Two Questions About Trump and Republicans that Stump Progressives « George Lakoff

Conservative moral values arise from what I call the Strict Father Family.

In this family model, father knows best. He decides right and wrong. He has the ultimate authority to make sure his children and his spouse do what he says, because what he says is right. Many conservative spouses accept this worldview, uphold the father's authority, and are strict in those realms of family life that they control.

These two brilliant economists explain hot-button issues | Bill Gates

But don't high taxes on wealthy people like me reduce our incentive to work hard and create new jobs? The answer is no. Banerjee and Duflo found no evidence that people at the top of the income distribution change their behavior in ways that affect the overall rate of economic growth. "In a policy world that has mostly abandoned reason … let's be clear: Tax cuts for the wealthy do not produce economic growth." Banerjee and Duflo have given me even more reason to advocate, as I did in this recent post, for a tax system in which the rich pay more taxes than we currently do.

The world without vaccines – GPEI

smallpox had affected the human population for three millennia, infecting the young, the old, the rich, the poor, the weak and the resilient.

Spread by a cough or sneeze, smallpox caused deadly rashes, lesions, high fevers and painful headaches – and  killed up to 30% of its victims, while leaving some of its survivors blind or disfigured.

An estimated 300 million people died from smallpox in the 20th century alone, and more than half a million died every year before the launch of the global eradication programme.

Cancer and the Coronavirus: Trying to Survive a Pandemic - The Atlantic

I finished the treatments, and every three weeks I got an infusion of Herceptin. With these interventions, I enjoyed a full remission that lasted 11 years. Do you know what it's like for a mother of school-age children to be given an 11-year remission? And it was the direct consequence of the UCLA scientist who never gave up.
