A Shropshire Lad, XL by A. E. Housman - Poems | Academy of American Poets

Into my heart an air that kills From yon far country blows: What are those blue remembered hills, What spires, what farms are those? That is the land of lost content, I see it shining plain, The happy highways where I went And cannot come again.

Pluralistic: Boeing, Spirit and Jetblue, a monopoly horror-story (21 Jan 2024) – Pluralistic: Daily links from Cory Doctorow

America has an airline that the public bails out, protects, and subsidizes but has no say over. Boeing has all the costs of public ownership and none of the advantages. It's the epitome of privatized gains and socialized losses.

This is Reagan's other legacy, besides the disastrous shortage of air-traffic controllers. The religious belief in deregulation – especially deregulation of antitrust enforcement – leads to a deregulated market. It leads to a market that is regulated by monopolists who secretly deliberate, behind closed board-room doors, and are accountable only to their shareholders. These private regulators are unlike government regulators, who are at least nominally bound by obligations to transparency and public accountability. But they share on thing in common with those public regulators: when they fuck up, the public has to pay for their mistakes.

Profile of Free Solo Climber Austin Howell - Climbing

Mine was more than a passing fascination with Howell's stunts: Though I've been a climber for over a decade now, I've suffered from depression for far longer. My lowest point followed a major depressive episode after college in 2012; my high school sweetheart had dumped me, I hated my job, and my social network felt paper-thin. My memories of that time are ones of deep loneliness. Of wandering snow-covered streets around Cambridge, Massachusetts, until 4 A.M. Of nights spent drinking alone. Rock climbing became a refuge, an escape from a brain that felt like it needed a reboot. The physical problem-solving—being forced to think about nothing but the moves, the thrill of executing a sequence just right—helped to temper the darkest darkness. I had never free soloed, but Howell's pronouncements about how climbing helped him deal with his demons felt like they spoke directly to me.

In Texas, nearly 18,000 cows died in a single barn fire. This is how it happened

But the digesters incentivize large farms to increase herd sizes to sell their waste, essentially paying large-scale polluters to create bigger methane-laced messes then clean them up, said Rebecca Wolf, senior food policy analyst at the Food & Water Watch, a Washington-based environmental advocacy group.

Ukrainian aid

In all, about $68 billion of the $113 billion enacted (60 percent) would be spent in the United States, benefiting the armed forces and US industry.

Imperial Eras: A Taylor Swift Studies Reading List - Longreads

Yes, date Taylor Swift, and not only will she shit on you on her album, but the song will become a single, then a hit, and then you will hear yourself shat upon by an army of young women at Staples Center. And then she'll deny that she was ever doing anything other than righteously manifesting her art. It's diabolical, and for a lifelong passive-aggressive like me, it's made her my hero.

The Nixon tapes remind us what a vile creature Henry Kissinger is.

After I published my book calling for his indictment, many of Kissinger's apologists said that, rough though his methods might have been, they were at least directed at defeating Communism. I never quite saw how the genocide in East Timor, say, had any effect in eroding the Berlin Wall. But I also pointed out that Kissinger did many favors for the heirs of Stalin and Mao: telling President Gerald Ford not to invite Alexander Solzhenitsyn to the White House, for example, and making lavish excuses for the massacre in Tiananmen Square. He is that rare and foul beast, a man whose record shows sympathy for communism and fascism. It comes from a natural hatred of the democratic process, which he has done so much to subvert and undermine at home and abroad, and an instinctive affection for totalitarians of all stripes. True, full membership in this bestiary probably necessitates that you say something at least vicariously approving about the Final Solution. What's striking about the Nixon tapes is that they show Kissinger managing this ugly feat without anyone even asking him. May my seasonal call be heeded: Let this character at last be treated like the reeking piece of ordure that he is.

People who were very high scoring on the traits in the dopamine system -- risk taking, novelty seeking, curious, creative, spontaneous, energetic, mentally flexible people -- go for people like themselves. They want that energy, curiosity, creativity. So that's one. I call these people, explorers. People were very high on the serotonin system, they tend to be traditional, conventional. Follow the rules. Respect authority. Detail oriented. Tend to be religious. Religiosity is in the serotonin system. These people also go for people like themselves. Traditional conventional people who follow rules, respect authority, detail oriented, want people like themselves.

'High testosterone people, I call them directors, not a great term. They go for negotiators. The high estrogen. People who are very high on the testosterone -- this can be women as well as men -- analytical, logical, direct, decisive, tough minded, skeptical. Good at what scientists call rule based systems, from engineering to math to mechanics to music. These people tend to go for their opposite, the high estrogen. I call these negotiators. Negotiators tend to be verbally skilled people skills, very contextual, holistic, synthetic, long term thinkers. They're very imaginative. They're very intuitive, They're trusting. So the bottom line is we all express all four of these systems.
