Very astute observation, one I made over 50 years ago growing up in East Texas, at least to the degree I could at the time. Believers will be the death of this country if we are not careful. When 'belief' trumps (no pun intended) facts, reason and logic there is no place left to go but down, especially when you believe man's purpose in life is to bring about the end of the world. At heart the people you describe are really no different from Al Qaida or Daesh in that respect.
In 2012 the Texas GOP had a platform plank calling for the 'elimination of teaching critical thought' in public schools because that might conflict with 'strongly held beliefs'. These people don't just wallow in ignorance, they worship it.
